Pre-Season so far..

We are deep in our pre-season preparations and have played four friendlies. These include friendlies against three Step 5 clubs and a combined Dorking Wanderers XI.

vs Farnham Town FC | 2nd July 2022 | 4-3 Win for Farnham

vs Hassocks FC | 9th July 2022 | 1-0 Win for Epsom

vs AFC Uckfield Town | 12th July 2022 | 2-0 Win for Epsom

vs Dorking Wanderers XI | 16th July 2022 | 2-1 Win for Epsom

We have chosen not to publish match reports for these friendlies because many of the team are trialists or new arrivals we aren’t announcing yet.

Our friendly against Croydon will now take place on the 26th July 2022 at Fetcham Grove (7.45 pm KO), the game has been moved due to the extreme heat expected on this week. In addition, our scheduled fixture against Leatherhead U23s has now been removed due to circumstances out of our control. We are currently in the process of finding a new opponent for this Saturday (23rd July) and when we do, you’ll hear it here first!

Phil Walker (1954-2022)

Epsom & Ewell Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Phil Walker.

Phil was a part of our memorable FA Vase final squad in 1975 before departing for Millwall.

Phil, a joint capture from Epson & Ewell along with team-mate Trevor Lee, was thrust straight into the first team and made his debut at The Den against Mansfield Town.

The pair of Walker and Lee became instant heroes when Trevor’s knock-down allowed Phil to thump home the game’s only goal, and at the Cold Blow Lane end.

Phil became a fans’ favourite with his fierce shooting and equally hard running, particularly with his box-to-box exploits. He also possessed a peach of a left foot which brought him his goals.

In his initial season as a Lion, Phil registered 35 appearances that displayed self-assurance in his ability and no less consistency. Phil was a member of the squad that won promotion in 1976 and he took to Second Division football like a duck to water. His performances began to attract numerous suitors, and neighbours Charlton Athletic forked out a fee of £120.000 to take him to The Valley in July 1979.

After a loan spell with Gillingham, Phil joined Eastern FC of Hong Kong in May 1983 and from 1985 he enjoyed a marvellous spell in Portugal with the likes of Leixoes and FC Maia. It was Phil who introduced Carlos Fanguerio to Millwall in August 2005. On his return to England, Phil set up a Soccer School in Wandsworth. Phil’s Millwall record saw him play 167 games and register 22 goals.

Everyone at Epsom & Ewell FC sends their condolences to the family and friends of Phil at this sad time.

Cup Draws Announced!

The SCL has drawn the first rounds of both the Peter Bentley Trophy and the Division One Cup.

We have been drawn away in both fixtures.

We visit Crawley Down Gatwick in the second round of the Peter Bentley Trophy having received a BYE in the first round. This will be our first fixture against Crawley Down Gatwick.

In the Division One Cup, we face a shorter away journey to Meadowbank to face local rivals Dorking Wanderers Reserves. After cruelly losing 2-1 in last year’s final to Midhurst, we are looking to put things right this time!

The FA Vase first-round fixtures will be drawn on Friday, as soon as they are published, you will hear it here first!

Pre-Season Training Returns

Our new-look squad returned to pre-season training this week as we step up our preparations for what is expected to be an exciting season ahead!

Thank you to everyone at Leatherhead Leisure Centre for allowing us to use your facilities.

Only one week left until we start our pre-season schedule away to Farnham Town!
